Antique Victorian Black Silk Mourning Bonnet with Hair
This is a beautiful antique black bonnet. I believe this to be from the 1800's. It appears to be all ORIGINAL and is in prestine condition!! This might be black silk - can't be sure - with a ribbon tie that ties under the chin. There is a very intricately detailed applique in a swirled and braided arrangement on the hat - some type of hair. Victorian folks were known to make many things out of hair. This may or may not be horse hair. I have seen other bonnets (in much worse shape than this) for sale online, indicating that they were made with horse hair. The hair on this is stiff so they may have applied something to the hair to keep its design. Measures 7" x 8 1/2". There seems to be wire? frame inside the bonnet to hold its shape and the bonnet has hand-stitching. Please be aware I am not an expert on Edwardian or Victorian hats, but this is definitely a very old bonnet, most likely worn in the 1800's as a mourning bonnet at a funeral. I have included many photos so you can see all its lovely detail.
